Marco Bezzecchi remains determined to take the 2026 MotoGP title fight down to the wire, despite a devastating crash while leading at the San Marino Grand Prix last weekend. The Aprilia rider lost the front at Turn 13 on the opening lap, throwing away a potential victory after a stunning pole position lap.
The Misano mistake was a major blow for Bezzecchi, who now trails championship leaders Marc Marquez and Aprilia teammate Jorge Martin by 33 points with eight rounds remaining. He had led the championship by 17 points after the Italian Grand Prix, but a 50-point swing in the standings has left him playing catch-up.
Bezzecchi's 2026 campaign has been plagued by inconsistency. He has failed to score points in five of the last seven grands prix, whether through mistakes, injury, or a ban. Yet his raw speed is undeniable – as shown by his record-breaking qualifying lap at Misano. The challenge now is to convert that pace into consistent results.
“It's a big gap, but it's not crazy,” Bezzecchi said in Austria. “With the current format, you can gain or lose points more easily. Marc is a tough rival, but my target is to get back to my consistency. Before the injury, I was super consistent, then I started making mistakes. The injury, the comeback was good, then last Sunday I made a mistake. I want to return to my best and fight until the end.”
The 27-year-old has been analysing his Misano crash in detail to understand his error. “I analysed the data and everything. Looking at it is painful, but it helps you understand the details. We take the positives: the speed and the consistency in the sprint. It's sad, but we have another chance this weekend,” he explained.
Questions remain about whether Bezzecchi has the maturity to sustain a title challenge against a rider of Marquez's calibre. But with eight rounds left, the Italian is not giving up. If he can rediscover his pre-injury consistency, he could still mount a serious challenge. The title fight is far from over.
