A gloomy weekend continues to haunt Pecco Bagnaia after the Italian rider failed to show any competitive spark during the sprint race at the Phillip Island circuit. The title contender's struggles on the Australian asphalt hit a brick wall right from Friday's practice sessions, leaving the factory garage searching desperately for answers regarding rear tire grip and overall setup.
The troubles for the Ducati star became glaringly obvious when he missed out on an automatic spot in Q2. Matters went from bad to worse on Saturday morning as he settled for sixteenth on the grid following poor strategic choices in damp conditions. Despite claiming some positive physical sensations on the bike, poor tactical decisions completely ruined any chance of fighting for pole position.
Reporting from Motosan.es, the difficult situation forced the reigning champion to conduct a brutally honest self-assessment regarding his machinery. Wrong tire choices combined with the notoriously tricky coastal weather conspired against his championship aspirations. "Tomamos una decision equivocada con el neumatico trasero. En cualquier caso, aunque hubiera conseguido pasar a la Q2, habria salido undecimo o duodecimo," Bagnaia stated bluntly, reflecting the depth of his woes.

The nightmare culminated when the sprint race barely reached its second lap before the rider crashed out of contention. While Marc Marquez engaged in a thrilling battle at the front, Bagnaia struggled heavily with low temperatures and high winds that stripped away crucial rear grip at the tricky circuit.
Looking ahead to the Grand Prix main race, Bagnaia refused to set unrealistic expectations amidst ongoing technical hurdles. Starting deep down the order means damage limitation is the primary goal for Sunday afternoon. "Ahora mismo, nuestro potencial realista esta entre la novena y la duodecima posicion. No creo que podamos aspirar a mucho mas en carrera, asi que tenemos que trabajar para intentar mejorar de cara a manana," he concluded, highlighting the urgent need for overnight improvements.
