A challenging weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has left Aston Martin reeling after both cars were forced to retire early due to what the team described as "abnormal" issues with their Honda power units. The double DNF has sparked an urgent internal evaluation regarding engine robustness in high-altitude conditions.

The unique geography of Mexico City, sitting 2,285 meters above sea level, places extreme strain on turbochargers and cooling systems. With the 2026 removal of the MGU-H, the turbo is forced to work significantly harder, which contributed to failure in the ERS cooling circuits and subsequent MGU-K malfunctions. Both Fernando Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll were forced out of the race within just five laps.

Aston Martin's chief trackside officer, Mike Krack, confirmed that the team had anticipated potential issues before the lights went out. "I think nobody was happy. We've had a lot of DNFs, and we had another double DNF. We discussed different levels of escalation and technical options, but we quickly realised they were insufficient, and there is nothing you can do," Krack stated candidly.

Addressing the technical breakdown, Honda's chief engineer Shintaro Orihara explained that the power unit reacted unexpectedly to the special circumstances in Mexico, including the extra tyre warm-up laps which placed undue stress on the cooling systems. "We had some stress on the ERS cooling circuits and then had a failure on the MGU-K. We will bring some countermeasures for the next event, not only on the hardware side but also the software side to improve our robustness," Orihara explained.

While the factory at Sakura is already shifting its primary focus toward the 2027 power unit, the lessons learned from the Mexico failure are deemed vital. Honda remains committed to applying these findings to enhance the durability of their current engine architecture, providing a glimmer of hope that Aston Martin can close out the season with significantly improved reliability.
