Andrea Kimi Antonelli emerged victorious in the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit, capitalizing on a strategic blunder that cost Lando Norris a dominant race. This eighth win of the season for the Mercedes driver strengthens his championship lead.
The race began with drama on the opening lap. Pole-sitter Norris led into Turn 1, but behind him, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton collided. Verstappen, on soft tyres, cut Turn 2 and initially held position, but Red Bull instructed him to let Antonelli and Hamilton by on lap 4 to avoid a penalty.
Hamilton, suffering from brake issues, retired on lap 6 after being repeatedly asked to pit. Meanwhile, Norris controlled the race, leading Antonelli by 5 seconds on lap 10, with Verstappen 11s back and Charles Leclerc 13s adrift.
Everything changed when Lance Stroll's brake failure triggered a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) on lap 13. Antonelli, Verstappen, and George Russell pitted immediately, while Norris and Leclerc stayed out. Norris then pitted right as the VSC ended, but a slow stop dropped him to fifth, 16 seconds behind Leclerc and 14 seconds behind new leader Antonelli.
Antonelli began to pull away, but on lap 21 he reported steering issues: "I didn't touch the wall, but the steering feels weird." He lost pace, dropping over three seconds by lap 25. Nevertheless, he managed his advantage to the chequered flag. Russell, who started on hards, made a second stop on lap 28 and then overtook Liam Lawson around the outside on lap 35 for fifth.
Antonelli's win extends his championship lead, while Norris was left to rue a lost victory. McLaren's strategy call proved costly, as Mercedes once again demonstrated their 2026 dominance.
