Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship with a commanding victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. Starting from second on the grid, the Mercedes driver seized the lead during a virtual safety car period and never looked back, crossing the line to extend his points tally to 292.

The win increases Antonelli's advantage over teammate George Russell to 81 points. Russell, who started from pole, had to settle for fifth place and remains second in the standings with 211 points. Lewis Hamilton's early retirement due to a brake failure leaves him third on 191 points, just ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris on 186.

Charles Leclerc was the sole Ferrari finisher in fourth, taking his points total to 167 and keeping him fifth overall. Max Verstappen of Red Bull sits sixth with 145 points, while Oscar Piastri (McLaren) is seventh on 120. The gaps are tightening in the midfield, with Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson showing promising pace for Red Bull.

Mercedes' strategic call to pit Antonelli under the virtual safety car proved decisive. While some rivals stayed out, the young Italian rejoined with a clear track advantage that he managed flawlessly to the end. Russell, meanwhile, struggled to recover after losing track position, highlighting the fine margins at the front.

Ferrari's day went from bad to worse when Hamilton stopped early, leaving Leclerc to fight alone. Despite a strong drive to fourth, Leclerc couldn't challenge the Mercedes duo. Mercedes also extended its lead in the constructors' championship, with Ferrari now under pressure from McLaren.

Antonelli's consistency and speed have made him the title favourite, but with plenty of races remaining, Russell, Hamilton, and Norris will be eager to close the gap. The Spanish Grand Prix also saw solid performances from Pierre Gasly and the Red Bull juniors, while newcomers Cadillac continue to search for their first points.

The full standings are available in the table below. The next race will test whether Antonelli's rivals can halt his momentum.
