Alpine has officially announced the appointment of Mike Elliott as Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of its Formula 1 team. The 52-year-old Briton returns to Enstone, where he previously served as principal aerodynamicist during the Renault and Lotus eras.
Elliott is no stranger to the paddock. After leaving Enstone, he joined Mercedes as head of aerodynamics and played a key role in the team's success, including eight constructors' and eight drivers' championships. He later rose to technical director and CTO, swapping positions with James Allison, before leaving Brackley in 2023.
"He has a proven track record in the sport, having contributed to an impressive eight constructors' and eight drivers' championships," Alpine stated. "Elliott's arrival at Enstone strengthens the team's technical capabilities as the team looks to build on the improved performances on track and close the gap to the top four teams."
In this new structure, Elliott will oversee the entire technical and engineering area at the Enstone factory. Executive technical director David Sanchez is understood to be reporting into him. This is a newly created position, signalling Alpine's ambition to elevate their performance to the next level.
Alpine is indeed striving to bounce back. After sacrificing last year to focus on the 2026 regulations, they are now competitive and fighting Racing Bulls for fifth in the constructors' championship. The 2026 campaign is also Alpine's first as a Mercedes customer team, adding further intrigue.
Elliott's recruitment is a serious statement that Alpine means business in building a strong technical foundation. With his experience and knowledge, he is expected to help bring Enstone back into contention at the sharp end of Formula 1.
