Franco Colapinto has been officially confirmed as an Alpine driver for the 2027 Formula 1 season, partnering Pierre Gasly. The announcement comes amid the Enstone-based team's resurgence, having switched from OEM status to a Mercedes power unit customer this year.
The confirmation follows Colapinto's impressive progress, with 19 points scored so far compared to Gasly's 44. More significantly, for the first time in his F1 career, Colapinto has enjoyed a full winter preparation, including pre-season testing, after twice stepping in mid-season previously.
This decision also marks the start of a new era for Alpine, which will begin a major title sponsorship deal with luxury fashion house Gucci in 2027. It signals the team's commercial ambition under executive advisor Flavio Briatore, who has always believed in Colapinto's talent.
“I am very pleased to remain with this team in 2027,” said Colapinto. “I feel very happy and very settled here and it’s been even better that we have made significant progress this year compared to last. We have a lot more milestones to reach and I know the team is working so hard in finding performance and making the car better and better.”
Briatore was effusive in his praise. “We are very happy to confirm our driver line-up for 2027 with Franco staying as a race driver alongside Pierre,” he said. “For me, having consistency is very important. We are now settled from a driver point of view and I have said many times that, while this is an important piece of the puzzle, the most significant we have to get right is designing and building a fast race car which absolutely remains our number one priority.”
Colapinto's impressive performances in Miami and Montreal this season have proven that he belongs in F1. With his future secured through 2027, the focus now shifts to pushing Alpine to the front, as the team embarks on a new chapter with Gucci.
