Franco Colapinto has received public backing from his team following a controversial television broadcast during the Formula 1 race weekend. The remarks made by guest Jeremy Clarkson regarding the driver's grid penalty sparked immediate reactions from the Enstone-based squad management.
The incident occurred when Jeremy Clarkson attended the United States Grand Prix weekend at the Circuit of the Americas. During a live television broadcast ahead of the qualifying session, the former motoring show host made a controversial joke while discussing the team's prospects and the driver's grid sanction.
When asked about the situation faced by the squad, Jeremy Clarkson jokingly remarked that the penalty was given due to the driver's nationality. The joke referenced a past incident involving a controversial trip to Patagonia back in 2014 which had drawn widespread public attention and local protests at the time.

Addressing the commotion generated across media platforms, the management of Alpine responded swiftly. They issued an official statement to defuse the situation while reaffirming their total support for the young driver as he prepared to tackle the challenges of the main grand prix grid.
The official team statement declared: We at Alpine are aware of the comments made by a team guest in a recent television interview in Austin. Franco is our driver and has our full support. The 10-place grid penalty itself was handed down to Franco Colapinto for taking his fourth new control electronics unit of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
