Former Grand Prix driver, GPDA director, and technical consultant Alex Wurz has provided an exclusive status update regarding the extensive portfolio of Formula 1 circuit projects currently under development across the globe. Speaking candidly about his engineering and consulting firm's operations, Wurz offered a comprehensive breakdown of the ambitious motorsport venues taking shape from Africa to the Middle East.
Addressing the highly anticipated project in Rwanda, Wurz confirmed that everything remains strictly on schedule. Having worked alongside his father Franz as government consultants since 2022, Wurz emphasized that the overarching vision goes far beyond a standalone racetrack. The master plan focuses on a multi-purpose development designed to benefit the local population in the region south of Kigali.
"Everything is on schedule. We have been working as government consultants since 2022 and placed great emphasis on a multi-use project that genuinely benefits the locals," Wurz stated, highlighting the strategic foresight behind the long-term agreement tailored for the 2030s. Initial earthworks are slated to commence at the beginning of 2027, with a Grand Prix strictly contingent upon the complete readiness of surrounding infrastructure, including hotels, leisure facilities, residential areas, and educational institutions.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East, construction at the massive Qiddiya entertainment and sports hub south of Riyadh continues to push forward despite regional geopolitical uncertainties. Wurz noted that while certain European construction supervisors were temporarily recalled, heavy development work on the ground has never stopped. With several amusement parks already finished and operational, the venue is widely anticipated to host its inaugural Grand Prix as early as 2028.
Beyond these flagship developments, Wurz's Vienna-based team is actively managing several other notable racing ventures. These include pending initiatives in Albania, early-stage planning for a circuit near the German border in Denmark, and detailed renovation phases at Willow Springs in California with construction slated for 2027. Backed by a dedicated multinational workforce of over thirty specialists, the former Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team associate proves that designing the future of global motorsport is a 24/7 commitment.
