Alex Marquez claimed victory in the 2026 Catalunya MotoGP Sprint after an intense battle with Pedro Acosta, while Aprilia suffered a disastrous afternoon in Barcelona.
The Gresini Racing rider defeated Acosta by just 0.041 seconds at the chequered flag, marking the closest MotoGP Sprint finish in the category’s history.
Acosta, starting from pole position aboard the KTM RC16, controlled the early stages of the 12-lap sprint before Marquez took over the lead at the beginning of lap four.

From a technical perspective, Barcelona once again highlighted the importance of rear grip management and traction control during the closing stages of sprint racing. Marquez successfully maintained stability on the medium-front, soft-rear Ducati GP24 package while Acosta gradually began losing braking consistency and corner-exit traction.
At one stage, Marquez extended his advantage to over six tenths of a second, although Acosta recovered strongly in the closing laps after briefly losing position to Trackhouse Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez.
The KTM rider launched his biggest attacks at Turn 5 and Turn 10 during the final laps, but Marquez defended aggressively on both occasions and prevented Acosta from mounting a final overtaking attempt before the finish.
Fabio di Giannantonio completed the podium for VR46 Ducati after a late-race battle with Fernandez, while Johann Zarco secured fifth for LCR Honda.
The sprint also became a nightmare for Aprilia. Jorge Martin crashed while running in sixth position and failed to capitalise on an opportunity to take over the championship lead.
Championship leader Marco Bezzecchi also endured a difficult sprint and could only finish ninth. Nevertheless, the Aprilia Racing rider still extended his championship advantage to two points following Martin’s crash.
Pecco Bagnaia recovered from 13th on the grid to finish sixth for Ducati Lenovo, while Franco Morbidelli dropped to seventh after running wide through the opening corners on lap one.
A major incident also unfolded during the early laps when Di Giannantonio made contact with KTM rider Brad Binder. Binder crashed and his motorcycle subsequently collected Honda rider Joan Mir. FIM stewards later confirmed no further action would be taken.
With his first sprint victory of the season now secured, Alex Marquez heads into Sunday’s Catalunya Grand Prix with growing momentum as Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia continue their increasingly intense battle at the front of MotoGP.
