Alex Marquez secured a dramatic victory in the 2026 Catalunya MotoGP Sprint after defeating Pedro Acosta by just 0.041 seconds at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The result marked the closest finish in MotoGP Sprint race history.
The Gresini Racing MotoGP rider immediately showed aggressive pace from the opening laps after starting from the front row. Acosta initially held the lead from pole position before Marquez managed to take control of the race under heavy pressure from the KTM rider.
Raul Fernandez briefly moved into second place after passing Acosta, but the KTM rider quickly reclaimed the position and spent the closing laps chasing Marquez. Behind the leading duo, Fabio Di Giannantonio also joined the podium battle after showing strong race pace aboard the VR46 Ducati.

From a technical perspective, the Catalunya Sprint once again highlighted the importance of traction management and rear tyre temperature control in low-grip conditions. Every rider selected the medium front and soft rear tyre combination in an attempt to maximise acceleration out of Barcelona’s long corners.
Marquez proved particularly effective at controlling rear tyre degradation on his GP24 Ducati throughout the sprint distance. While Acosta appeared more aggressive under braking and corner entry, Ducati’s stability advantage helped Marquez defend his lead through the final sector until the chequered flag.
Major drama once again struck Jorge Martin, who suffered his fourth crash of the weekend on lap three of the Sprint. The Aprilia Racing rider had looked set for significant progress after climbing rapidly from ninth on the grid.
Martin’s retirement ultimately allowed team-mate Marco Bezzecchi to extend his championship advantage despite fading to ninth position during the closing stages of the race.
Fernandez eventually secured fourth place after remaining competitive throughout the Sprint and engaging in several direct battles with both Martin and Acosta. The result marked one of the strongest performances of the season for the satellite Aprilia rider.
An incident also occurred at Turn 1 when Di Giannantonio collided with Brad Binder. Binder crashed and his KTM subsequently collected Joan Mir. However, the FIM Stewards decided no further action was necessary.
The victory further strengthens Alex Marquez’s momentum following several competitive weekends stretching back to Jerez and last year’s Barcelona performances. With Ducati continuing to show strong pace in low-grip conditions, Marquez is once again emerging as a serious contender in the 2026 MotoGP title fight ahead of Sunday’s grand prix.
