Alex Albon has explained why he signed a single-year contract extension with Williams, while his team-mate Carlos Sainz has committed to a longer-term deal. The contrasting lengths of the deals have drawn attention as Williams struggles to score points, having gone five consecutive race weekends without a top-ten finish in the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Williams confirmed its driver line-up for 2027 this week, announcing new contracts for both Albon and Sainz. However, Albon admitted he wants to see the team's progress before making a longer commitment.

"That's possibly more [a question] to JV (James Vowles, team principal) than to me. I want to see what the team can deliver. I want to see a strong bounce back from this year," Albon said, as reported by Crash.net.

The Thai-British driver highlighted several shortcomings Williams has faced this season, including car performance, weight issues, and missed testing opportunities. "There are a few things this year that we've let slip, and I know JV and everyone at the team is putting a huge effort in to correct these issues," he added.

Williams had placed significant emphasis on 2026 as the season to leap up the order and challenge for podiums, but the reality has been far from that. The team's struggles have raised questions about its ability to turn things around.

Albon insisted that his decision is not a lack of confidence in Williams, but rather a desire to see the planned improvements materialize. "This year, I've been brought into a deeper analysis of where it went wrong from last year to this year. I'm satisfied with what those reasons are. At the same time, I also want to see these things materialise, and I want to see these changes happen next year," he explained.

In contrast, Sainz said he is not the type to walk away when times are tough. "I don't think it's part of my character to jump ships when the situation is at its worst," said the Spaniard. "In the back of my head, I always wanted to renew, but I was obviously worried. I needed to make sure this doesn't happen again. I had to go back to everyone to understand where we are and how this has affected our plans."

The decision to offer Sainz a long-term deal while Albon received only a one-year extension highlights an interesting dynamic in Williams' management. Sainz is seen as a long-term investment, while Albon prefers flexibility to evaluate his options in the future.
