WRC, Sportrik Media - Adrien Fourmaux of Hyundai Motorsport experienced an extraordinary and disruptive situation at Rally Croatia 2026, after his event ended prematurely on Saturday following an interruption.
What began as a standard rally stoppage quickly escalated into a chaotic off-stage incident. As the crew dealt with the halted car, a crowd gathered and attempted to remove various components from the vehicle, exposing vulnerabilities in asset security during open-access rally environments.
Fourmaux explained that securing the car’s parts became an immediate priority as individuals tried to take items including tyres, bodywork, and lighting components.

“We tried to keep all the parts because some people were trying to take them—tyres, bumpers, lights, basically everything they could,” he said.
The situation intensified when one individual removed a tyre using a trailer and transported it to a private garage, where it was locked away. Co-driver Alexandre Coria was forced to track down the location in order to recover the equipment.
“One man took the tyre to his garage, locked it, and covered it. Alex had to figure out where it had been taken,” Fourmaux added.
The tyre was eventually located and partially recovered, but the incident highlighted the challenges of safeguarding equipment in rally events, where stages and road sections remain accessible to the public.
Amid the disorder, assistance came from a local Croatian family, who helped the crew secure the remaining parts by moving them onto private property.
“This family came to help us. We moved all the parts to their house and yard so no one could take them,” Fourmaux explained.
An unexpected personal connection added a unique dimension to the situation. The family had ties to France, creating a sense of familiarity for the crew during an otherwise tense episode.
“It felt like destiny. The family originally came from Croatia but moved to France, and their children live in the same area as us,” he said.
After the situation stabilised, the crew were able to share a meal with the family, bringing a calmer conclusion to what had been a highly volatile sequence of events.
“In the end, we had a nice lunch together, but before that it was really like a fight. I was sitting in the car while people were trying to take parts,” Fourmaux concluded.
From an analytical perspective, the incident underscores structural challenges in rally event security, particularly in environments where spectator proximity is integral to the sport. Unlike circuit racing, rallying operates across open and semi-controlled areas, increasing exposure to unpredictable external factors.
For the FIA and event organisers, the episode may prompt renewed evaluation of safety and security protocols, especially concerning post-retirement procedures and protection of team equipment.
Rally Croatia 2026 thus serves as a case study in how non-competitive variables can significantly impact a WRC event, reinforcing the need for balanced access and control as the championship continues to evolve.
