Adrian Newey has revealed that his condition has improved after a difficult period with his health forced him to reduce his day-to-day involvement at Aston Martin. The British designer admitted that he was not fully fit throughout 2025 and had to manage the balance between his work and recovery much more carefully.
Newey joined the Silverstone-based team in March 2025 after completing a period of gardening leave following his departure from Red Bull Racing. His principal task was to lead the development of Aston Martin’s car for the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, although the team’s opening phase of the season has fallen short of expectations as it continues to operate near the back of the field.
“I’m OK now, but it’s been a difficult period. In truth, I was not 100 per cent last year. I had to balance health and work much more carefully,” Newey told AstonMartinF1.com.

Despite reducing his direct involvement, Newey believes his working relationship with the engineering group remained strong. He credited the team’s adaptability and support for ensuring that his absence from some operational duties did not create a significant interruption to the technical programme.
Newey has appeared in the Formula 1 paddock only twice this season. His limited trackside presence is also connected to Aston Martin’s interpretation of his team principal position, a role he assumed towards the end of the 2025 campaign.
Newey explained that the team principal position is partly a formal requirement because FIA regulations oblige every team to nominate someone for the role. He stressed that the title does not automatically require him to complete all media duties or attend every race weekend.
“Team Principal is, in part, a formal requirement. Under FIA regulations, you have to nominate someone in that role. It’s a job title, not a job description,” he said.
Within Aston Martin’s structure, Newey’s principal responsibility concerns major strategic decisions, with Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll also closely involved in those calls. Having recovered from the health issues that restricted his activity, Newey’s attention now returns to directing the technical project and helping Aston Martin respond to a disappointing start to the 2026 season.
