The high-performance SUV segment is heating up once again as a heavily disguised BMW prototype has been spotted undergoing rigorous track testing around the legendary Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The Munich-based manufacturer is leaving nothing to chance as development ramps up for the next-generation performance model ahead of its scheduled production entry in 2028.

According to the latest insider reports, the upcoming BMW X5 M is slated to offer a dual-powertrain strategy, accommodating traditional internal combustion enthusiasts alongside zero-emission adopters. The flagship SUV will be available with both a powerful V8 engine and a fully electric variant, sitting proudly at the very pinnacle of the lineup.

The upcoming battery-electric variant is expected to lock horns with heavyweight rivals in the luxury EV space, including the likes of the electric Porsche Cayenne and the high-flying Lotus Eletre. While exact powertrain output figures and performance specifications remain strictly under wraps for now, anticipation surrounding the dual-path approach is massive.
