Fabio Di Giannantonio ended the MotoGP Austria Sprint in tenth place, far from his expectations. The VR46 rider not only missed out on points but also lost further ground to the top trio: Jorge Martin, Marc Marquez, and Marco Bezzecchi. This result is a heavy blow for Diggia, who is fighting to break into the elite group.
The main issue? Rear grip. As Di Giannantonio revealed after the race, he struggled massively with rear traction—something he rarely experiences. “We have a different casing than usual, that's true,” he told Sky Sport MotoGP. “Even though, in my opinion, we had already used it in Brazil. I've never complained about grip with all the casings we've had this year, and I've always been a rider with a lot of grip; but this weekend I'm really struggling, and it seems I'm struggling even compared to the other Ducati riders.”
This complaint is not unique to Diggia. Alex Marquez and several other Ducati riders felt the same, likely due to the different Michelin tyre construction brought to Austria. The Red Bull Ring demands high traction out of corners, so rear grip issues are magnified. “I'm missing a lot of grip at the rear, I can't get the bike to accelerate out of corners, and I seem to be losing out to other manufacturers too, which is really unusual for me,” he added.
As a result, Di Giannantonio's position in the riders' standings has worsened. He failed to score points while rivals ahead pulled further away. In a tight Sprint, any small mistake can cost positions. Diggia admitted he pushed hard all weekend, but the results haven't matched expectations. “We need to learn and improve. I was pushing hard this weekend to do well, but even in the Sprint we struggled. We'll try to improve for tomorrow,” he said.
Asked about tyre choice for the main race, Di Giannantonio couldn't confirm. “Better with the medium or soft? I don't know, we'll find out tomorrow. I really hope so,” he concluded. The main race in Austria will be a tough test for the VR46 team to bounce back from this setback.
With a circuit that demands maximum performance, all eyes will be on Ducati and how they address the grip issues plaguing their riders. If not resolved quickly, Ducati's dominance in Austria could be disrupted by rivals from other manufacturers.
