Jenson Hodson, the young New Zealander fighting for the Aussie Racing Cars title, has made the tough call to walk away before the penultimate round. It comes on the back of a frustrating weekend at Queensland Raceway that all but ended his championship hopes.
The Kiwi had entered the second half of the season firmly in contention, sitting just 20 points behind leader Anthony Di Mauro. But a disqualification for crossing the control line before a restart, followed by a spin in the final race, saw him tumble down the order and out of realistic title reach.
Now, Hodson is throwing his full focus into his rookie Super2 campaign with Matt Stone Racing. He currently holds 11th in the standings, making him the second-highest rookie behind Bayley Hall.
“This wasn’t an easy decision because I’ve really enjoyed my time in Aussie Racing Cars and the category has been great to keep my seat time up between Super2 rounds,” Hodson said. “But with the opportunities coming up, we had to look at the bigger picture and make the call that best supports where we’re trying to go.”
Once his maiden Super2 season wraps up, Hodson will stay busy over the summer racing Sprintcars on both sides of the Tasman. The speedway star, who hails from New Zealand, made his Australian Sprintcar debut last summer in 360-LS competition, though it ended in a dramatic rollover that made global headlines.
“One thing we can confirm right now is that we’ll be keeping busy over summer with significant Sprintcar commitments on both sides of the Tasman,” Hodson added. “We’ll focus on Australia and are pleased to announce that Brodie Tulloch and the team at Tullboro Race Store will again look after our Australian campaign.”
He also hopes to race in the New Zealand title at his home track, Baypark, on March 5-6, provided it doesn’t clash with his Australian schedule. More announcements about his speedway appearances are expected soon.
Before that, Hodson will be back in Super2 action at Mount Panorama on October 8-11.
