Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Audi has demonstrated encouraging performance potential in the early stages of Formula 1 2026, despite scoring only two points across the opening three rounds, with underlying pace suggesting significantly stronger results are achievable.

Entering the championship as a full works manufacturer following its takeover of Sauber, Audi has combined its own power unit development with an established chassis platform from Hinwil. The result is the Audi R26, which has consistently shown midfield competitiveness and, at times, the ability to challenge teams higher up the order.

In qualifying, the car has delivered particularly strong performances. Gabriel Bortoleto reached Q3 on multiple occasions, including a top-10 start in Australia and a ninth-place grid position in Japan. Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg has regularly hovered just outside the top 10, reinforcing the car’s one-lap pace.

However, translating qualifying performance into race results has proven difficult. A combination of operational issues and poor race starts has significantly hindered Audi’s ability to convert opportunities into points. In Shanghai, Hulkenberg’s race was compromised by a 16-second pit stop due to a wheel gun failure, while both drivers have repeatedly lost positions off the line.

Hulkenberg dropped to 15th at the start in China and as low as 19th in Japan, while Bortoleto also lost ground early at Suzuka. These setbacks have consistently placed both drivers on the back foot, making recovery into the points against similarly paced rivals extremely challenging.

“There have been poor starts, and it’s not the first time. That’s certainly not our strength at the moment,” said Mattia Binotto.

Binotto acknowledged that the issue is complex and not easily resolved, but emphasized its importance given the team’s strong qualifying form.

Beyond operational execution, Audi’s primary limitation lies in its power unit. As a first-generation engine project, the AFR26 is still in an early development phase, particularly in terms of energy deployment efficiency and straight-line speed.

The turbocharger design appears to play a role in the team’s weak starts, contrasting with more effective launch characteristics seen from rivals such as Ferrari. Additionally, suboptimal energy management leaves the car vulnerable when battery charge is depleted, exposing it to overtaking on straights.

“The gap to the top teams largely comes from the power unit, which is not unexpected,” Binotto explained.

“Energy deployment and straight-line speed are not our strengths at the moment. If you deploy too much and drain the battery, you become exposed.”

Audi’s development trajectory may benefit from the FIA’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO), which could grant extra flexibility to close the performance gap. However, Binotto made it clear that the project is structured around long-term objectives rather than immediate gains.

“Engine development takes time, especially with fundamental concepts. That’s why we have set 2030 as our target,” he said.

He stressed the importance of patience and adherence to a structured development plan, noting that rapid solutions are unlikely in such a complex environment.

Following an intense and largely reactive start to the season—focused on addressing reliability concerns—Audi now enters a critical phase. The break before Miami offers an opportunity to analyse data, refine its approach, and begin a more proactive development programme.

“Starting development will be one of the focuses in the coming weeks to be better prepared for Miami,” Binotto added.

Off track, the departure of Jonathan Wheatley has reshaped the team’s leadership structure. Binotto has resumed a central leadership role, although he indicated that additional support will be required at race weekends to balance factory responsibilities.

“For the future, we are not looking for a new team principal. I will continue in this role, but I need support at the track,” he stated.

Despite internal changes, Binotto emphasized the importance of collective performance over individual roles, pointing to strong operational execution in areas such as pit stops and race management.

Ultimately, Audi’s early 2026 campaign reflects a team with a solid technical foundation but clear areas requiring improvement. With competitive chassis performance already in place, progress in power unit development and race execution will be decisive in unlocking the car’s full potential as the season progresses.
