MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Alex Marquez of Gresini Racing strongly criticised the track conditions at the 2026 Brazil MotoGP in Goiania after severe asphalt degradation forced a last-minute reduction in race distance.

The weekend at Autodromo Internacional Ayrton Senna was plagued by surface issues, culminating in Race Direction cutting the race from 31 to 23 laps just moments before the start. The decision followed visible deterioration of the asphalt, particularly between Turns 10 and 12, raising serious safety concerns.

Marquez, who has nearly 250 grand prix starts, described the situation as highly unusual and unacceptable within modern MotoGP standards. He pointed to sections of the track where the asphalt was breaking apart, leaving loose stones on the racing line.

“It was really strange, with fewer laps and not easy conditions.”

“Between corners 10 and 11, all the asphalt was coming out, with stones everywhere. Honestly, it was quite unacceptable.”

Despite the issues, the Spanish rider acknowledged positive aspects of MotoGP’s return to Brazil, particularly the strong fan support and the circuit layout, which he believes has solid technical potential.

“The positives are the people and the layout, which is really nice.”

“But the negatives… the weather didn’t help, and today the asphalt was coming out. I think the track needs a full resurfacing.”

Marquez also agreed with Enea Bastianini and Brad Binder that the shortened race should have been accompanied by a delayed start, allowing riders equal time to adjust strategies and tyre choices.

“I think it would have been better to delay the start so everyone could prepare at the same time or change tyres.”

“But in the end, everything was already decided.”

In the race, Marquez climbed from eighth to sixth on the opening lap and maintained that position until a late overtake by Ai Ogura of Trackhouse Racing. He acknowledged the move as clean while highlighting the difficulty of managing front tyre performance under such conditions.

“It was not a bad race for us, we just tried to survive, especially with the front tyre.”

“Ogura made a very good move on the last lap. I tried my best, but it wasn’t easy.”

The result marked Marquez’s first points of the 2026 season, placing him eighth in the championship standings ahead of the next round at the Circuit of the Americas. Meanwhile, team-mate Fermin Aldeguer finished eighth, indicating early progress for Gresini.

With serious concerns raised over track safety standards, attention now turns to the circuit authorities to implement comprehensive resurfacing ahead of MotoGP’s future return to Brazil, while teams prepare for a different challenge at Austin in the upcoming round.
