Toto Wolff has urged Mercedes to carefully manage the growing pressure surrounding Kimi Antonelli following the Italian rookie’s sensational start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. Wolff believes the explosive rise in Antonelli’s popularity across Italy is becoming one of the team’s biggest challenges as the 19-year-old now leads the world championship standings.

Antonelli arrived in Miami carrying extraordinary momentum after securing three consecutive pole positions and grand prix victories. The results handed him a 20-point advantage over team-mate George Russell, while also making him the youngest driver ever to lead the Formula 1 world championship since the series began in 1950.

His performance in Miami also placed Antonelli alongside legendary names such as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher after becoming only the third driver to achieve three consecutive pole positions before converting them all into grand prix victories. The combination of qualifying speed and race consistency has immediately transformed Antonelli into Formula 1’s biggest emerging star.

"The easiest part is actually keeping him grounded inside the team. His parents have played a huge role in making sure that happens," Wolff explained.

However, Wolff believes the larger issue comes from the rapidly growing expectations of the Italian public, which has begun embracing Antonelli as a new national sporting icon. The situation intensified after Italy’s national football team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving tennis star Jannik Sinner and Antonelli as the country’s most recognisable international athletes.

According to Wolff, the success of Sinner in tennis combined with Antonelli’s rise in Formula 1 has generated enormous media and sponsor attention inside Italy. Mercedes is now attempting to carefully manage Antonelli’s schedule and public exposure to avoid disrupting either his technical development or mental balance during the championship fight.

"Now everything is about Sinner and Antonelli. That is something we need to control. There are so many requests from the media and sponsors, so it is our job to keep the handbrake on and stop things becoming excessive," Wolff added.

Mercedes has strong reasons to remain cautious after experiences during last season’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where Antonelli became mentally exhausted throughout the weekend due to overwhelming public attention and commercial obligations in Italy. The team is determined to avoid a repeat scenario now that the championship pressure is significantly greater than during his rookie campaign.

From a technical perspective, Mercedes is also beginning to view Antonelli as the centrepiece of its long-term Formula 1 project. His adaptation to the latest generation car has progressed faster than initially expected, particularly in tyre management and race-pace consistency. With Formula 1 now entering the European phase of the calendar, Mercedes’ ability to balance Antonelli’s performance development and public exposure could become a decisive factor in the 2026 title battle.
