Volvo has unveiled its first extended-range plug-in hybrids for the European and American markets, introducing new variants of its best-selling SUVs, the XC60 and XC90. The XC60 now offers an electric-only range of up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, while the larger XC90 reaches 160 kilometers. This is more than two and a half times the electric range of current plug-in hybrid variants.
The leap in capability comes thanks to a new, higher-capacity battery integrated into the floor, along with a more powerful electric motor that can work alongside the gasoline engine when needed. Both models continue to be available in mild-hybrid form, giving customers flexibility in choosing their preferred level of electrification.
Visually, the XC60 receives a comprehensive restyling: a refreshed grille, redesigned front bumper, hood, front fenders, and new wheels. The LED headlights with Matrix technology have been refined, as have the tailgate, LED taillights, and rear bumper. Inside, there’s a new dashboard and door panel design, complemented by wood trim and ventilated nappa leather in Cardamom color.
This move underscores Volvo's commitment to electrification and addresses consumer concerns about limited electric range. With 200 km of electric range, the XC60 plug-in hybrid becomes a compelling option in the premium SUV segment, while the XC90 remains competitive with its 160 km.
For the Indonesian market, these models could signal a future shift, though no official announcement has been made. Volvo has long been a pioneer in hybrid and electric technology in the region, and this development highlights the global industry's aggressive push toward electrification.
With significantly longer electric range, drivers can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels for daily commutes—a meaningful step toward a cleaner future without sacrificing performance or luxury.
