Verstappen Upbeat at Monza Despite "Treacherous" Track

Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen described the free practice sessions at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix in Monza as "treacherous" due to frequent off-track incidents scattering gravel. Nevertheless, the Red Bull driver delivered a promising performance, finishing sixth in FP2, just 0.192 seconds behind Lando Norris. A new upgrade package bolstered Red Bull’s competitiveness.

Sportrik’s detailed analysis, based on the FP2 session on September 5, 2025, explores Verstappen’s performance and Red Bull’s prospects at Monza.

Red Bull’s Strong Showing in FP2

After a challenging Monza weekend last year, where Verstappen called his car an “undrivable monster,” Red Bull showed marked improvement. Verstappen posted a 1:20.070s lap in FP2, trailing Norris (McLaren) by just 0.192 seconds. The team introduced a new floor and front wing for the RB21, which appeared effective.

Verstappen expressed satisfaction, stating, “We are a bit more competitive, and I’m reasonably happy with the car.” However, he noted the track’s challenges, with drivers like Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes going off and scattering gravel, creating unpredictable conditions.

Monza’s Tricky Conditions

Verstappen highlighted the “treacherous” nature of the sessions, with multiple cars sliding off at corners like Lesmo 2 and Ascari, leaving gravel on the track. “The sessions today were treacherous with a lot of cars going off,” he said, emphasizing the added difficulty for drivers. These incidents, including a red flag caused by Antonelli’s crash, disrupted the session’s flow.

Despite these challenges, Verstappen’s pace suggests Red Bull is in contention with McLaren and Ferrari, represented by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who both finished in the top five.

Outlook for Qualifying and Race

Verstappen’s FP2 result positions him well for qualifying on September 6, 2025. The RB21’s upgrades have enhanced its competitiveness, potentially allowing Red Bull to challenge for pole. However, Ferrari, buoyed by home support, and McLaren remain strong contenders.

Sportrik anticipates that tire strategy and managing Monza’s slippery conditions will be critical. With Verstappen’s experience as a four-time world champion, he is well-placed to target a podium finish, erasing memories of last year’s struggles.
