Max Verstappen took his first lap of the Madring, the new Spanish Grand Prix venue, via simulator. The Red Bull driver revealed that the track is extremely challenging, with numerous crash incidents he encountered.
The Madring takes over as host of the Spanish Grand Prix this year, while the Barcelona race is officially titled the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The new track is expected to see frequent red flags and safety cars, after a recent F3 test saw 19 red flag periods across two days. Even accounting for junior drivers, that total is alarming.
Williams boss James Vowles described the track as a "car killer," with close walls and high speeds in certain sections a particular concern. The layout has been likened to a combination of Monaco and Jeddah.

To complete his first lap, Verstappen used a game console with a pad rather than a wheel. Judging by the footage, there was hardly a wall or run-off area he didn't test. In a video released by Red Bull, Verstappen concluded, "If I had done one more lap, it would have been fine. Challenging. I've hit so many barriers, it's unbelievable. I think on a wheel, it would have been a bit more under control. I hope so."
These comments came after multiple cries of "whoa!", "no, no, no, no, no!", and other variations. Although street tracks have not seen Verstappen's best results this term, he scored his first podium of the year at the Canadian Grand Prix, on a track possibly most similar to the Madring, with a blend of high-speed and technical sections.
However, if top speed proves decisive, the Spanish weekend could be another tough one for Verstappen and teammate Liam Lawson, who once again stands in for the injured Isack Hadjar.
With a circuit that demands high precision, thorough preparation and quick adaptation will be key for all teams. Verstappen and Red Bull must make the most of every practice session to understand the track limits and find the ideal setup. Otherwise, they could struggle to compete at the front.
