Max Verstappen's home race at the Dutch Grand Prix ended in heartbreak after a massive shunt at Zandvoort. The Red Bull driver was caught out by changing weather conditions on the final banked corner.
On lap 72, Verstappen hit a wet patch on the drying track, sending his car careering into the barriers. "I got caught out, it was still quite wet in that corner," he told media including Motorsport Week. "As soon as I saw the dry patch coming, I thought, now you can accelerate, but clearly that didn't work."
Despite the heavy impact, Verstappen was not required to visit the medical centre. "I asked if I could skip it, and they said it's still below the threshold," he explained.
The crash was a bitter end for Verstappen, who had finished on the podium at Zandvoort every year since 2021. However, he admitted a podium was always a long shot. "Overall we had a disappointing weekend pace-wise. We just couldn't fight with the guys ahead," he added.
Verstappen also revealed he was not feeling well physically all weekend. "I'm just looking forward to a week break to recover, because I really didn't feel good," he said. He hopes to be more competitive at Max Verstappen's next race at Monza with Red Bull.
With 12 rounds done, Verstappen sits sixth in the standings and realistically out of title contention. He is not expecting miracles in Italy. "We are the fourth-fastest team, so it's not like we can suddenly do magic things," he stated. "It's just the reality we live in."
