When the lights went out at Monza, Ferrari’s hopes of a home resurgence turned into a near-perfect nightmare. Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth, while Charles Leclerc—who damaged Hamilton’s front wing at the start—ended his race against the barriers at Parabolica on lap two. Instead of closing the gap, the Maranello squad fell further behind in both championships.
Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari team principal, admitted the worst-case scenario materialized. “We knew we would lose a lot on top speed, and that’s what happened—maybe even worse than expected in the race,” he said. “We lost positions without being able to respond, and we had to push the tires too hard through corners, wearing them out before others.”
The result leaves Lewis Hamilton 76 points behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the drivers’ standings. In the constructors’ championship, Ferrari trails Mercedes by 122 points and leads McLaren by just 59, after both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished ahead of Hamilton at Monza.
Vasseur refused to dwell on despair, instead viewing the remaining races as a series of opportunities, with Madrid as the next target. “We have to take it race by race and give our best every weekend,” he said. “We knew Monza would be the toughest, but Madrid is already ahead—it’s a good chance for us.”
However, concerns are not just about the lack of straight-line speed. Ferrari’s weekend execution is again under scrutiny, especially after the start incident involving both of its own drivers. With the season winding down, Ferrari has no room for further mistakes if it wants to salvage a turbulent campaign.
