Ugo Ugochukwu delivered a composed performance under pressure in Formula 3 qualifying at Madrid, putting himself in prime position for the championship showdown against Freddie Slater. The Campos driver secured fourth in the first session and second in the second, while Slater was hampered by car issues, qualifying 17th and eighth.
With back-to-back qualifying sessions to set the grid for two Feature Races and the Sprint Race, time was of the essence. Ugochukwu made the most of it, though he admitted struggling in sector one. "I was one-tenth off before starting the last push, and I was fifth or sixth, so it was very tight there," he told media including Motorsport Week. "We have been struggling all week in sector one. I was just trying to minimise the time loss there and then do a good rest of the lap, which I did."
The title fight is intense, with only 15 points separating Ugochukwu and Slater coming into the weekend. The pressure was palpable, especially on the new Madrid track with no room for error. "There was pressure to deliver, do a good lap, especially on a track like this with no room for margin," said the Formula 3 star. "I knew I had to commit. Every lap, I tried to push it more and more, getting closer to the limit. But of course, there's no room for mistakes at this point in the season."
Slater, his closest rival, endured a torrid session. Car issues plagued him throughout, leaving him 17th for the first Feature Race and eighth for the second. This handed a significant advantage to Ugochukwu in the championship battle.
"It was a positive day for us," Ugochukwu admitted. "Two good qualities are exactly what we needed. We just executed everything well, no mistakes. I got the lap in when we needed it. So pretty happy overall. I think I maximised it to the limit."
In the Sprint Race, Ugochukwu claimed three points, reducing the gap to 12. With two Feature Races remaining, his mental edge and better grid positions could be decisive. However, the unknown Madrid circuit still holds many mysteries, and Slater will not give up without a fight.
For Ugochukwu, the focus is now on maximising every race. "We can look forward to the races to maximise our points," he said. If he can maintain his qualifying form, the F3 title will be within his grasp.
