Triple Eight Race Engineering is not sitting idle amid Supercars' parity storm. Team manager Mark Dutton has publicly declared that his squad will push for an aerodynamic review ahead of next month's prestigious Bathurst 1000.
The statement follows a series of controversies surrounding changes to the Chevrolet Camaro that were deemed to give Ford teams an unfair advantage. Previously, Supercars permitted a change to the splitter skids on the Camaro ahead of The Bend, which increased downforce and pushed the car outside the agreed 'parity box'.
Ford teams responded by issuing a legal letter to Supercars on Friday evening, alleging the change breached the Teams Racing Charter. Although the Camaro's wing angle was reduced on Saturday morning as a temporary fix, the belief that the Camaro still holds an aerodynamic edge remains strong.
Dutton emphasised that his team is not seeking an advantage but merely wants to ensure technical parity. "We'll be pushing hard to get the category to ensure it is a level playing field with technical parity as we head to Bathurst," he said. "We'll be doing some centre-of-gravity testing on the three models and also pushing to get the aero situation reviewed."
Interestingly, Dutton made no mention of barometric pressure testing, which Triple Eight has declared a non-issue despite other Ford squads' concerns. This indicates that the parity issue in Supercars is far from resolved.
Meanwhile, on track, Triple Eight endured a tough weekend at The Bend. Co-drivers Nick Percat and Scott Pye were involved in early incidents, with Pye receiving two 15-second penalties. Will Brown managed to bring the #888 car home in fourth, while Broc Feeney finished 23rd after Percat was the victim of multiple incidents, including a hit from Zak Best that left the #88 Mustang several laps down.
"If it had been a clean race, with the pace we had, we would have been challenging for the top spot," Dutton said. "Everyone responded well to the challenges of minimising the effect of the carnage. We need to work harder to ensure we minimise the chances of getting into the sort of situations that hurt us at this time."
With Bathurst 1000 approaching, pressure is mounting on Supercars to resolve the parity issue. Triple Eight and other Ford teams will continue to push for fair competition. The centre-of-gravity testing currently underway in Melbourne this week is a first step, but the aerodynamic review appears to be the key.
