Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff has firmly dismissed claims made by former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko regarding the future and team status of George Russell within the Silver Arrows squad.
Marko had previously suggested that Russell has permanently lost his top-tier status inside the garage as teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli closes in on securing the 2026 Formula 1 world championship following a dominant masterclass at the United States Grand Prix.
The young Italian sensation now sits on the verge of his maiden world title, needing just two more points in Mexico City to seal the championship. This remarkable trajectory prompted Marko to publicly doubt whether Russell can ever recover from the psychological blow of being outperformed after entering the season as the clear title favorite.

However, Wolff was quick to reject those assertions during media briefings, offering a staunch defense of his driver's capabilities and resilience under pressure.
Helmut, he's my Austrian not-so-buddy, but I respect his opinion. But I think he's wrong on George. George has all the ability. I think the car doesn't suit him, Wolff stated when addressing the remarks.
The Mercedes team principal elaborated on the mental challenge drivers face when expectations meet harsh track realities, especially when dealing with an exceptionally fast teammate who constantly chips away at momentum.
And I believe that in a new season, George, if we provide him a quick car, has absolutely what it takes to win a championship. So, I think it's a bit too easy to say, let's forget about all these years where he won in F2 and F3, his rookie years and the European championships back-to-back in karting, that's still all there, Wolff concluded.
