Toto Wolff has finally spoken out. The Mercedes-AMG F1 boss refused to stay silent as George Russell faced a barrage of public criticism after openly admitting his struggle to keep up with Kimi Antonelli in the 2026 Formula 1 world title race. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports F1 after the Spanish GP, Wolff launched a fierce defence, calling accusations that his team deliberately sabotaged Russell complete nonsense.

"There are some 'couch warriors' who throw comments after watching a clip on the internet. Accusing us of giving a strategic penalty or disadvantaging George is complete bull," Wolff said angrily. He highlighted how public opinion is formed from fragmented information, without understanding the true dynamics inside the team.

Strong Warning for Both Drivers

Tension in the Mercedes garage had actually peaked since the Italian GP a week earlier. Kimi Antonelli charged from 19th and engaged in an intense wheel-to-wheel duel with Russell. Wolff admitted he almost pressed the emergency team order button because his heart nearly jumped out of his chest seeing both cars almost collide.

"Their fight on track was very close. If one of them ended up in the gravel, we would all look like idiots at Mercedes, just like other teams have experienced," Wolff told Yahoo Sports. He even issued an extreme mid-season warning: if healthy competition turns toxic like the Hamilton vs Rosberg era, he will not hesitate to drop one driver from the main seat.

Defending Monza Strategy: No Favouritism

Wolff also clarified speculation that his team deliberately won Antonelli through a pit stop strategy during the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) at Monza. According to him, the initial strategy predicted a one-stop using the Hard tyre that Russell was on was the best option. However, the Medium tyre was forced upon Antonelli because he had to attack from the back. The unexpected VSC momentum actually benefited Antonelli's Medium tyres.

"As long as we are transparent and there is no hidden agenda or favouritism, this is the best way to manage it," Wolff added, defending his team's decision.

Admiration for Antonelli: Like AI

While trying hard to keep Russell's morale from completely dropping, Wolff could not hide his admiration for the 20-year-old Antonelli. In a separate interview with MotorBiscuit, Wolff likened Antonelli's rapid adaptation to an artificial intelligence system (AI agent) that learns from past mistakes in an instant and immediately executes win after win.

This praise contrasts with Russell's situation, who is 81 points behind Antonelli in the provisional standings. Wolff now plays a crucial role as mediator: on one hand he must let Antonelli cruise to seal the 2026 world title, on the other he must desperately protect Russell's reputation and psychological condition so Mercedes remains solid in securing the Constructors' Championship without a civil war in the remaining season.
