The Formula 1 title race may be done and dusted, but there is an intriguing battle developing right behind champion-elect Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The Italian youngster moved to the brink of clinching his maiden world title with a dominant ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix, opening up a near-unbeatable 123-point buffer to his garage neighbour.
This dominant result means the 20-year-old driver will surely wrap up the crown next weekend in Mexico City, where a mere ninth-place finish would be enough to crown him as F1's youngest ever world champion. Even if he secures the 2026 championship with four rounds remaining, an intense fight is shaping up over the runner-up spot in the drivers' standings.
Mercedes driver George Russell currently holds P2, however, ongoing struggles with the W17 car have left him highly vulnerable to the chasing pack. Only a single point separates Russell from Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, while fourth-placed Max Verstappen sits six points behind, and Charles Leclerc is lurking only nine points adrift in fifth position.

The fight could easily turn into a five-way battle, with McLaren's Lando Norris sitting just 22 points further back from Leclerc as the season enters its final stretch. Despite the fierce competition behind him, Russell shrugged off the prospect of securing second place in the drivers' championship, insisting that the position carries no real significance for him personally.
"For me, as long as we win the constructors', that's the main thing," Russell stated regarding his main priorities. "For the team, obviously I'd like to finish best of the rest, but P2, P3, P5 is not champion, so it doesn't mean anything."
On paper, finishing second is a fundamental target for Russell to maintain his standing within the squad. As much as he downplays the achievement, finishing behind his teammate in a dominant car requires a strong end to the campaign to build confidence heading into the winter break. Anything other than a runner-up finish will undoubtedly be viewed as a missed opportunity.
