Oscar Piastri admitted that his slow puncture during the Singapore Grand Prix actually served as a blessing in disguise, enabling him to overtake Lewis Hamilton for fifth place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The Australian driver found himself running a lonely sixth place—20 seconds behind third-placed Hamilton and seven seconds adrift of his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris—when the virtual safety car was deployed on lap 39 after Lance Stroll pulled aside due to a clutch issue.
Despite running on the oldest tyres among the frontrunners by a significant margin, Hamilton elected to stay out on worn soft rubber. Piastri chose the same strategy with medium tyres that were 15 laps younger, but a slow puncture abruptly forced the McLaren charger into the pits for a second stop on lap 41.
Rejoining the track on fresh soft tyres with a 37-second deficit to Hamilton, Piastri unleashed blistering pace that was two seconds a lap faster, bridging the gap by the antepenultimate lap of the race. The Ferrari driver defended stoutly but proved entirely powerless to hold off the charging McLaren during the final stages of that 44-lap stint.

"That was definitely the most we could have done, we didn't have the pace to do any more. Obviously, here is a massive track-position race," Piastri pointed out regarding the strategic challenge of overtaking on the tight street circuit. He felt personally satisfied with his performance despite the unfortunate puncture disrupting his initial rhythm.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella noted that the exact root cause of the slow puncture remained under investigation alongside tyre supplier Pirelli. Stella emphasized that the unusual occurrence needed proper analysis since it could easily cost crucial time in a closer championship battle, ensuring the team gets on top of the technical anomaly moving forward.
