Experienced Mexican driver Sergio Perez has officially signed a contract extension with Cadillac ahead of a historic milestone weekend in his Formula 1 career. The announcement regarding the 36-year-old came right before his home race, where he is set to make his 300th grand prix start in Mexico City. This achievement makes him only the seventh driver in F1 history to reach the 300-start mark, and the very first to do so in front of his home crowd.

This extension marks another chapter in his comeback following his departure from Red Bull at the conclusion of the 2024 season, which left the six-time race winner without a race seat for 2025. The American newcomer squad ultimately brought him back to partner Valtteri Bottas for their inaugural campaign in the premier class. However, Cadillac has faced a steep learning curve during its debut year, failing to score championship points yet, with Perez's highest classified finish being 14th after losing a top-ten result in Monaco due to a post-race penalty.

Despite the competitive struggles of the car, Perez has consistently outperformed his teammate while providing vital feedback that has guided the team's car development and trackside operations. Perez noted that his decision to commit reflects strong confidence in the long-term vision and potential of the squad as they prepare for forthcoming regulatory changes.

Building a Formula 1 team from the ground up takes time, relentless work and patience, but the progress we are making together is incredibly rewarding, stated Perez. There is still a lot of work ahead of us and I am fully committed for the next three years. Cadillac CEO Dan Towriss echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that securing the veteran driver's expertise provides vital stability and leadership.

While Perez's future is now firmly secured, the announcement has triggered renewed discussions surrounding the second seat and whether his current teammate will remain on board for the upcoming seasons amid varied comments from team management regarding contractual situations.
