George Russell secured a dominant pole position for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, his fifth of the 2026 season, with a blistering lap of 1m42.526s at the Baku City Circuit. The Mercedes driver beat Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri, but the session was overshadowed by a heavy crash for championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who will start from 16th.
Antonelli's incident occurred in Q1 when he clipped the inside wall at Turn 1, causing terminal front-left suspension damage on his Mercedes W17. Although he had already set a time quick enough to advance, he was unable to continue. The Italian, who leads the drivers' standings, faces a difficult race from the back of the grid.
Russell, who had shown strong pace all weekend, capitalised on his teammate's misfortune. He initially trailed the McLarens in Q3 after Piastri and Lando Norris jumped ahead, but responded with a 1m43.037s on his second run, half a second faster than Piastri. On his final attempt, he found another five-tenths to set an untouchable 1m42.526s.
Ferrari opted for a delayed run plan, which helped Leclerc secure second place, albeit eight tenths adrift of Russell. Piastri had to settle for third, while Isack Hadjar celebrated his return from injury with fourth. Norris made a mistake on his final lap and ended up fifth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Pierre Gasly was seventh for Alpine, and Max Verstappen could only manage eighth after slowing for yellow flags caused by Norris.
Carlos Sainz made the most of Williams' upgraded FW48 to qualify ninth, with Franco Colapinto completing the top ten after an erratic Q3. In Q2, Russell was fastest with a 1m43.462s, just two tenths ahead of Verstappen, as the battle for Q3 spots intensified. Sainz capitalised to secure a rare Q3 appearance, while Colapinto snatched tenth from Oliver Bearman in the dying seconds, ensuring both Alpines reached Q3.
This qualifying result gives Russell a golden opportunity to close the gap in the championship standings. With Antonelli starting from 16th, the British driver can maximise his points haul. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix promises to be a thrilling affair around the challenging Baku City Circuit.
