George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a dramatic qualifying session at the Baku City Circuit. However, the Mercedes driver identified two major threats for the race: Max Verstappen and his own teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
Qualifying Full of Surprises
Russell impressed by using just one set of soft tyres throughout Q3, while his rivals switched to new rubber. He set the fastest time, 0.837 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who will start second. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, who dominated FP3, slumped to eighth due to an internal combustion engine issue that affected his electrical deployment.
On the other side, Kimi Antonelli crashed in Q1. The young Italian hit the wall, damaging his front suspension and steering. Although he tried to return to the pits, he was instructed by race engineer Peter Bonnington to stop the car. Antonelli had already set a lap quick enough to progress to Q2 but was unable to take part, so he was classified 16th.
The Monza Shadow
Russell cannot forget Antonelli's remarkable performance at Monza, where he started 19th and won. Now, starting from 16th, Antonelli could potentially repeat a similar comeback. "I feel Verstappen's going to be a threat, and obviously we can't discount Kimi," Russell said. "He started 19th at Monza and now he's in 16th. So, yeah, he should be leading by a few laps earlier this time..."
That statement shows Russell is fully aware of Antonelli's ability to bounce back from difficult positions. Moreover, Antonelli currently leads the drivers' championship by 81 points over Russell. This season, Russell has sometimes failed to capitalise on opportunities, while Antonelli has been consistent.
Pressure and Opportunity
Asked if this weekend could be his turning point, Russell remained calm. "I can't recall many mistakes he's made this season," he said. "When you look at every championship campaign, even for the winners, there are mistakes along the way. I still keep on believing and keep on fighting until it isn't possible anymore. But I don't feel any pressure. I feel excitement every time I jump into the car."
Starting from pole, Russell has a golden opportunity to reduce the points gap. However, he must be wary of Verstappen, whose car has been repaired, and Antonelli, who has a history of brilliant comebacks. The Baku race always delivers drama, and this time will be no different.
