Russell Fumes at Verstappen: Quali Chaos at Italian GP

George Russell was left frustrated by Max Verstappen's tactics during Formula 1's Italian Grand Prix qualifying, which he felt ruined Mercedes' slipstream plan. Kimi Antonelli was poised to give Russell a tow, but Verstappen's sudden braking disrupted their strategy.

The incident occurred at the end of the out-lap approaching the Parabolica corner. Verstappen braked unexpectedly, causing Antonelli and Russell to bunch up too closely behind the Red Bull. This prevented Antonelli from providing an effective slipstream, prompting him to abort his lap.

Costly Chaos Decides Pole

Russell ultimately missed out on pole, which went to Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Russell described the moment as "a bit of a mess" and felt he was too close behind Verstappen to produce a clean flying lap.

Verstappen admitted he wanted to benefit from Antonelli's slipstream but cited power unit issues that caused his engine to stutter. Meanwhile, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff saw it as Verstappen playing "clever" games, making everyone bunch up before the final corner.

As a result, Verstappen will start from sixth, but could gain a spot due to Oscar Piastri's grid penalty. This adds to the intrigue, with Russell needing to fight back from a less-than-ideal starting position.
