Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The threat of wet running at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka has significantly diminished, easing concerns over Formula 1 drivers facing their first experience of the new-generation cars in rain conditions this season.

Since pre-season testing and the opening rounds in Australia and China, all sessions have been conducted in dry conditions, leaving teams without real-world data on wet-weather performance under the 2026 regulations. As a result, earlier forecasts suggesting rain at Suzuka had raised concerns about an unpredictable and potentially disruptive race weekend.

However, updated weather projections indicate a notable shift. A large storm system that had been moving west-to-east across Japan is now expected to weaken and clear before the race weekend begins. This development reduces the likelihood of heavy rain impacting key sessions at Suzuka.

That said, the possibility of light and scattered showers remains, particularly across southern Japan, including the Mie Prefecture where Suzuka is located. These showers are expected to be intermittent and unlikely to significantly affect the overall running of the weekend.

The improved forecast has direct implications for team strategy, particularly in relation to car setup and tyre preparation. With a higher probability of dry running, teams are expected to prioritise optimising performance for dry conditions rather than preparing extensively for wet-weather scenarios.

From a technical standpoint, the 2026 cars are still in an early phase of understanding across the grid, especially regarding aerodynamic behaviour and tyre characteristics under varying track conditions. The absence of wet running so far has made any potential rain a major unknown—one that now appears less likely to materialise.

Ambient temperatures across the weekend are expected to remain just below 20 degrees Celsius, with winds predominantly coming from the south to south-southeast. This wind direction could create a headwind into Turn 1, influencing braking stability, while the section from the second Degner corner to the hairpin runs roughly north, adding another layer of aerodynamic consideration.

With the rain threat reduced, focus shifts back to outright performance and execution under dry conditions. Nevertheless, the inherently variable nature of weather at Suzuka means teams will remain cautious, as even minor changes could still influence one of the most technically demanding events on the Formula 1 calendar.
