Red Bull Targets Two Key Areas After Practice at COTA 2026

A promising start to the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix weekend at the Circuit of the Americas saw four-time world champion Max Verstappen finish Friday practice in second and third positions. Driving for Red Bull Racing, the Dutchman remained within two tenths of Charles Leclerc, who set the benchmark across both sessions in Texas.

Despite not pulling away from the pack as seen in earlier rounds, the early signs from the RB22 chassis pleased the team, though finding the right compromise across a technically demanding circuit layout remains a delicate balancing act for the engineering crew.

"It's been a positive start to the weekend. This track is never easy when it comes to finding the right compromise between the low and high-speed corners," Max Verstappen stated following the conclusion of FP2, highlighting the ongoing effort to fine-tune the car balance amidst tricky track conditions.

Technical director Pierre Wache identified two critical focal points for the team going forward. Alongside dealing with the severe track bumps that have drawn heavy criticism from drivers, addressing low-speed corner deficits stands out as the primary objective.

"It's clearly the low speed performance that we are focused on at the moment. Low speed is the key for us," Pierre Wache explained, pointing to GPS data indicating where rival teams hold an advantage in braking zones and tighter corners.

Telemetry comparisons revealed that while competitive in high-speed sections and down the long straights, the car loses valuable ground through slower technical complexes, making overnight setup adjustments crucial for qualifying and race pace.
