Max Verstappen secured one of the most significant victories of his 2021 Formula 1 title-winning campaign after defeating Lewis Hamilton through a bold strategic call by Red Bull Racing at the French Grand Prix.

The race initially appeared to be slipping away from Verstappen. Starting from pole position, the Dutch driver ran wide at Turn 1 in difficult windy conditions on the opening lap, handing the lead to Hamilton. Early in the race, Mercedes looked firmly in control, with Hamilton maintaining a comfortable advantage outside DRS range.

The momentum shifted when tyre degradation proved higher than expected around Circuit Paul Ricard. Red Bull reacted first by bringing Verstappen into the pits ahead of Hamilton. The undercut worked perfectly, allowing Verstappen to regain track position once the Mercedes driver completed his own stop.

Rather than committing to a conventional one-stop strategy, Red Bull made the decisive move of the race by fitting Verstappen with a fresh set of medium tyres for a second pit stop. The aggressive approach mirrored the strategy Mercedes had successfully used against Red Bull earlier that season in Barcelona.

The additional stop temporarily dropped Verstappen behind both Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, but the tyre advantage quickly became evident. Verstappen overtook Bottas before relentlessly reducing the gap to Hamilton, whose hard tyres were losing performance during the closing stages.

The defining moment came on the penultimate lap. Using the long Mistral Straight and the superior grip from his fresher tyres, Verstappen swept past Hamilton to reclaim the lead. He eventually crossed the finish line 2.9 seconds ahead, while team-mate Sergio Perez completed a strong day for Red Bull by finishing third.

"We had to work hard for it, but of course it was very rewarding."

The victory became one of the clearest examples of Red Bull's strategic strength during the 2021 season. Beyond securing valuable championship points, the result proved crucial in the title fight, reinforcing Verstappen's momentum in a season-long battle that ultimately went down to the final race.
