Red Bull Explains Why Silly Start And Radio Issues Will Persist Until 2027

Although Max Verstappen once again secured a podium finish during the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Circuit of the Americas, there was little satisfaction in the Red Bull Racing hospitality. Team members acknowledged that Kimi Antonelli's race pace was impossible to match, while both Red Bull drivers were frustrated that the team failed to extract the full potential from its package in Austin due to strategic missteps and power unit behaviour.

The difficult Sunday afternoon was also caused by recurring problems throughout the year: poor starts and technical glitches with the team radio. This led to vocal frustration from Isack Hadjar, who expressed his annoyance in the media pen regarding the team's inability to execute basic operational tasks.

"At the moment, it's the little things we can’t do. I have poor radio, I don't even know what's happening. And whenever I drop the clutch, it's going into a nightmare. If we fix these two issues, we might already be on the podium. It seems like we can do the hardest things, but we can’t do the silly things," Hadjar stated, highlighting the stark contrast in the team's engineering capabilities.

By 'the hardest things', Hadjar referred to Red Bull Racing successfully overturning a massive performance deficit to the front of the field. Earlier in the year, the average race pace deficit stood at 1.2 seconds per lap, and clawing back that much performance over a single season remains a massive engineering feat for the Milton Keynes squad.

Addressing these observations, team principal Laurent Mekies clarified that the radio and start issues must be treated separately. While the radio malfunction is deemed unacceptable for a front-running outfit and must be resolved immediately, the start deficiency is far more complex and will remain an obstacle until the 2027 technical cycle.
