Rafael Camara delivered a masterclass in timing and raw pace to secure F2 pole position at the Italian GP, edging out Alex Dunne and Joshua Duerksen in a frantic qualifying session.
Rapidly improving track conditions triggered a late flurry of flying laps, turning early garage standoffs into an intense battle for the front row.
Weekend So Far
Earlier, Alex Dunne led the sole practice session for Rodin Motorsport with a 1:31.957. However, the session was red-flagged when Colton Herta spun off at Turn 7 and hit the inside wall. Herta walked away unhurt, but the session could not resume before time expired.
Dunne ended practice fastest ahead of Oliver Goethe and Nico Varrone, with Nikola Tsolov and Roman Bilinski rounding out the top five.
Qualifying Drama
When qualifying got underway, drivers initially waited in their garages for optimal track conditions before heading out together. Drama struck early when Dunne ran wide at the Ascari chicane. Joshua Duerksen then jumped to P1 with a 1:31.701, holding off Noel Leon by 0.177 seconds.
But Rafael Camara soon surged to the top with a 1:31.326, leaving Leon and Duerksen behind. Dunne found himself down in P22 before pitting for adjustments. Returning on older tyres and without a tow, he delivered a strong banker lap to climb to P4, just 0.453 seconds off the pace.
Late Lunge for Glory
With five minutes left, the pitlane became a frenzy as drivers jockeyed for track position. Roman Bilinski aggressively weaved through the pack to jump the queue before launching his final effort. The timing screens lit up as Martinius Stenshorne moved to P3, and Dunne briefly held P2. However, Duerksen produced a clutch late improvement to secure second, leaving Camara untouchable at the top.
This result is a significant boost for Campos Racing on home soil. Camara will start the feature race from pole, with Duerksen and Dunne lining up behind him. The championship battle just got even more intriguing.
