Formula 1, Sportrik Media – Formula 1 has officially announced the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix at the Portimao circuit from the 2027 to 2028 seasons under a two-year contract with the Portuguese government and local promoter.
This marks the comeback of racing at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve after its last appearances in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the "rollercoaster" track quickly gained popularity for its dramatic elevation changes and thrilling overtaking opportunities.
Portimao witnessed Lewis Hamilton breaking Michael Schumacher's win record with his 92nd victory in 2020, repeating the feat in 2021.
The race's return is widely seen as the direct replacement for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, set to conclude after the 2026 edition. Furthermore, it is unrelated to the Belgian Grand Prix's biennial rotation at Spa-Francorchamps starting in 2027.
“I’m delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar and to continue igniting the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.
“The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats.”
Portugal's Minister of Economy Manuel Castro Almeida added: “Portugal is back on the Formula 1 map. The F1 Grande Prémio de Portugal will have a direct impact on economic activity, generating opportunities across tourism, trade, and SMEs – projecting the country as a competitive and reliable destination.”
Jaime Costa, CEO of Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, stated: “We are thrilled to welcome Formula 1 back to Portugal. Portimão’s unique ‘rollercoaster’ layout will challenge the world’s best drivers and create a spectacle that fans will love.”
Deeper analysis indicates Portimao's return strengthens Europe's position in an increasingly global F1 calendar. Yet, with Zandvoort departing and Spa rotating, European slots remain balanced within the 24-race cap.
On the other hand, this modern venue offers technical challenges with extreme elevations, ideal for new regulations. Additionally, Portuguese government support emphasizes long-term economic benefits for the Algarve region.
Future prospects depend on post-2028 extensions, given high global demand for GP hosting. However, Portimao could become a permanent fixture if fan turnout and economics prove strong.
