Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Pierre Gasly will not receive a grid penalty for the Sprint race at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix after Formula 1 stewards investigated an incident involving Max Verstappen during Sprint Qualifying in Shanghai.
The incident occurred near the end of the SQ2 session when the Alpine driver exited the Turn 14 hairpin slowly while Red Bull Racing driver Verstappen approached on a flying lap at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Verstappen complained over team radio that Gasly was positioned on the racing line while he was attempting to complete his lap, describing the situation as “ridiculous” as he passed the Alpine through the final sector.

Despite the complaint, both drivers progressed through the session, with Gasly ultimately qualifying seventh for the Sprint race while Verstappen secured eighth place on a difficult day for Red Bull. Team-mate Isack Hadjar completed the top ten in tenth position.
Following a review of video evidence and telemetry data, the FIA stewards concluded that although Verstappen encountered Gasly while on a flying lap and on his preferred racing line, the Alpine driver did not unnecessarily impede him.
According to the stewards’ report, Gasly chose to remain on the left-hand side of the track as it was considered the safest option at that moment. While the stewards acknowledged that he could theoretically have taken a different line by moving to the right side of the circuit, the situation did not constitute an unnecessary obstruction.
As a result, the stewards ruled that Verstappen had not been significantly impeded during the incident and therefore decided to take no further action against Gasly. The decision confirms Gasly’s seventh-place starting position for the Chinese Grand Prix Sprint race remains unchanged.
