Oscar Piastri conceded that McLaren had no chance of challenging George Russell for pole position in qualifying for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Despite this, the Australian driver was content with his performance.
Piastri will start Saturday's race from third place, behind Russell and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Meanwhile, his teammate Lando Norris will start from fifth. This marks the sixth time this season that Piastri has out-qualified Norris in a Grand Prix.
The result came after a challenging start to the weekend for McLaren, who were some way down the order in the earlier free practice sessions. The team found additional pace in Friday's qualifying, but were still no match for Russell, who was over eight tenths faster.
McLaren brought a significant bodywork upgrade package to boost straight-line speed. Piastri admitted that the qualifying pace was a surprise. "We found a bit of pace. It's not the first time that's happened to us this year," he said. "We seem like we're a bit on the back foot through practice. We've come out in qualifying, and we just find that bit extra. I was pretty surprised to see us one-two after the first lap of Q3, but unfortunately, we had no hope against George."
Despite not being able to match Russell's pace, Piastri was pleased to be back in the top three. "I'm happy with how the weekend's gone so far. It's never easy around here, especially when it's so gusty like today, so I'm very happy to be back in the top three," he added.
The strong winds in Baku indeed pose a challenge. The narrow and exposed street circuit makes car balance unpredictable. Piastri explained how he manages these conditions. "Honestly, trying to keep it between the lines, the highway lines down the straights, not easy, especially it always sounds so dull talking about the wind in a Formula 1 car, but even when the walls disappear and you get a bit more open, you really get a massive gust, so it's not easy at all. There's 30- or 40kph difference sometimes between laps, so you've really got to be on your toes and adapt on the fly."
With this result, the battle in the drivers' championship intensifies. Russell, who secured pole, has a great opportunity to reduce the points gap to the leader. Meanwhile, Piastri and Norris must work hard from their starting positions to keep their championship hopes alive.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be a test for McLaren to prove that their improved performance is not just a fluke. With the speed Russell has shown, the task of winning will not be easy for Piastri and Norris, but on the streets of Baku, anything can happen.
