The opening day of action at the Lusail International Circuit proved to be a challenging affair for Pedro Acosta. The young Spanish sensation representing the factory KTM squad ended Friday's practice down in fourteenth position, a result that forces him into the treacherous waters of Q1 during Saturday's qualifying sessions.
Coming into the race weekend, expectations were already tempered regarding how the RC16 would handle the sweeping corners of the Qatari venue. Yet, the reality on track was starkly more complicated. Finishing over a second adrift of the benchmark time set by Fabio Di Giannantonio, the talented Spaniard realized that immediate overnight changes were paramount.
Interestingly, Acosta's race pace on a used medium rear tire was initially quite encouraging, showing steady and reliable lap times during long runs. The real headache materialized the moment the team bolted on a fresh soft rear tire in preparation for the crucial time attack simulations.
Reflecting on the perplexing drop in performance, Acosta didn't hold back his frustration. "I expected this weekend to be very tough for us," he explained. "However, something strange happened. Initially, I had a good pace for five laps on a used medium rear tire, and the lap times were genuinely solid."
Switching to the soft rear compound completely derailed his momentum instead of delivering the anticipated one-lap speed boost. "The time attack with the medium front and the soft rear tire was an absolute disaster. It literally couldn't get any worse than this. I was fast on the medium tire, but then terribly slow on the soft. Something really needs to change now."
With garage neighbors securing direct progression into Q2, Acosta faces a daunting task ahead. Solving the telemetry puzzle with the soft compound is now the primary mission if he hopes to salvage a strong grid position for the upcoming sprint and grand prix.
