Pedro Acosta upcoming move to the factory Ducati squad for next season has dominated the championship's rider market headlines. However, it has now been revealed that the Spanish prodigy actually had an opportunity to join the Borgo Panigale camp much earlier during a difficult 2025 campaign with KTM.
The challenging environment prompted discussions with the VR46 outfit mid-season. Ultimately, the decision was made to honor the final year of his existing contract, a choice that paid off handsomely when he secured his maiden victory in Austria earlier this season.
Looking ahead to partnering Marc Marquez in 2027, Acosta is widely tipped to mount an immediate world title challenge. Yet, the Spaniard candidly admitted that he was not mentally prepared to face such a direct challenge on equal machinery at an earlier stage.
Reflecting on his thought process during an interview with AS, Acosta explained the psychological hurdles he faced. "Things happen the way they do. Maybe I could have jumped on the bike, but with all the frustration I was carrying, I wouldn't have been able to perform well," Acosta stated.
He emphasized that the current timing aligns perfectly with his personal growth as a competitor, especially after overcoming turbulent phases and outperforming peers on similar equipment. This resurgence provided the necessary confidence that he is now fully equipped for the challenge.
As he prepares for the next chapter, Acosta views the upcoming transition as a crucial learning curve to study alongside the multi-time world champion. Having spent years embedded within KTM's technical framework, mastering a new operational philosophy will be his immediate objective before seeking to match the veteran benchmark.
