The sprint race at Sepang brought a challenging scenario for Pecco Bagnaia, who admitted he was fortunate that spots of rain began to fall during the 10-lap encounter. The double world champion struggled heavily with his Ducati machine after facing catastrophic rear tyre degradation just three laps into the race.

The Italian rider had hoped for a much stronger performance given his previous history at the Malaysian venue. However, reality hit hard when he could manage no better than 10th on the starting grid after having to fight his way through Q1, eventually crossing the finish line in sixth place, 8.3 seconds adrift of the race winner.

According to Crash.net, Bagnaia explained that his rear tyre completely gave up after only three laps, making the intermittent rainfall a timely stroke of luck. Speaking to Sky Italy, the factory rider mentioned that he had to row the impossible just to keep the motorcycle on track and maintain some semblance of pace against his rivals ahead.

Data analysis reveals that Bagnaia is currently suffering from excessive rear wheel spin upon entry into corners compared to other riders on the same machinery. This persistent sliding prevents him from utilizing the tyres effectively, causing rapid wear that depletes a compound designed to last much longer in a matter of laps, further extending a winless drought dating back to last year.

Despite the ongoing technical hurdles and missing out on his usual front-running pace, Bagnaia views the sixth-place finish as a step forward compared to recent struggles. He remains entirely unfazed by the fact that his previous circuit lap record still stands, emphasizing that he is fully aware of his own capabilities on the bike.
