NASCAR has introduced a unique "Swear Jar" promotion for the 2026 Chase, turning driver profanity into a fan competition. So far, the first three races have seen 661 swears, bringing the total to $3,305 after Bristol. NASCAR even provided a breakdown of the top swear words: "fuck" leads with 323 mentions, followed by "shit" with 152, and "hell" with 29. The promotion has generated buzz on social media, with fans eagerly participating.
This approach is a stark contrast to other racing series, especially those sanctioned by the FIA, whose president Mohammed Ben Sulayem takes a hard line on public swearing. The official tagline of the promotion even pokes fun at this: "Others fine, we pay. Every bleep builds the pot! And **** it, one fan will win it all. Hell yeah!"
NASCAR's relaxed attitude extends to on-track conduct as well. Drivers are generally allowed to settle scores on the track, and physical altercations are often met with a play-on approach. At Bristol, Ryan Blaney and Carson Hocevar were given the all-clear after their fistfight on pit road.
NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell explained the philosophy on the Happy Hour podcast: "If drivers are going to handle their own business, the way we looked at that, how it played out, we're not going to encourage fighting, but what we are going to encourage is passion, right? And those are two guys — Blaney's showing his passion, showing his fire. So no, there's nothing coming from us in terms of [penalties]."
With the Swear Jar promotion, NASCAR embraces the emotional and human side of racing, creating deeper fan engagement.
