The opening day of the Malaysian Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit delivered a promising yet puzzling start for the Austrian manufacturer. Pedro Acosta secured a strong fourth place in Friday practice, while his fellow stablemates also displayed encouraging pace to break directly into Q2. Enea Bastianini claimed seventh overall despite suffering a crash, and Maverick Vinales fought his way into eighth, marking his first direct Q2 appearance since the Sachsenring round back in July 2025.
This collective performance left the Mattighofener squad in high spirits, as only Ducati managed to place more machines directly into the top qualifying session. However, despite finishing comfortably inside the top five, Acosta admitted to feeling a sense of bewilderment regarding his actual speed versus the physical sensation he experienced aboard his RC16 machine. The young Spanish sensation noted that he was only about four-tenths of a second adrift from the benchmark time set by Marc Marquez.
Reflecting on his day, Acosta stated, "Es stimmt, dass wir nicht weit hinter Marc Marquez liegen, 0,4 sec," before expressing delight over his garage partners' progress. "Es freut mich fur KTM, dass Maverick und Enea ein Schritt nach vorne gelungen ist. Maverick hat seit seiner Verletzung arg gelitten und jetzt war er auch sehr schnell, wenn er allein fuhr." Despite the impressive lap times, the rider confessed to lacking confidence with the front tire, struggling with turning capabilities, and losing crucial time specifically under heavy braking zones.

Aside from mechanical feedback, the state of the tarmac at Sepang drew heavy criticism from the grid following numerous crashes throughout the sessions. Acosta pointed out that the track surface deteriorates further each year, noting that entire chunks of asphalt and loose stones are breaking apart around the circuit layout. He narrowly avoided a high-speed tumble at Turn 15 thanks to a miraculous save, admitting that handling front-end stability had been a constant battle since the opening practice session.
Holding fourth place in the riders' world championship standings ahead of the Sepang races, Acosta is too far behind the leading title contenders to mount a championship charge under normal circumstances. With a significant mathematical gap to the top spots, the primary objective for the remaining sessions is solving the front-end feedback issues, finding greater consistency, and maximizing race pace without needing to push the machine beyond its comfortable limits.
