MotoGP Austrian GP 2026: Martin Takes Pole, Marquez Close Behind

Jorge Martin will start the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position after setting the fastest time in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring. The Aprilia rider, who regained the championship lead following his sprint race victory, will line up just in front of title rival Marc Marquez.

Pedro Acosta will start from third place and is eager to make amends for his sprint error and deliver KTM a home win. Marco Bezzecchi and returning Ai Ogura will start fourth and fifth respectively for Aprilia, with Alex Marquez completing the second row on the Gresini Ducati.

Francesco Bagnaia will line up seventh after an improved qualifying, leading Fabio di Giannantonio and Fabio Quartararo. Johann Zarco completes the top 10 on the grid.

Two full-season riders will miss Sunday's race due to injury. Maverick Vinales remains sidelined due to the crash he suffered at the German GP more than a year ago, with Pol Espargaro again substituting for him at Tech3. Joan Mir will also be absent from Spielberg after medical tests detected "altered" parameters in his blood. Honda has called in test rider Takaaki Nakagami as his replacement.

Qualifying at the Red Bull Ring was incredibly tight, with Martin edging Marquez by just 0.015 seconds. Acosta was only 0.071 seconds adrift, while Bezzecchi and Ogura posted solid times to secure competitive starting positions. The battle at the front is expected to be fierce given the Austrian circuit's demanding braking zones and acceleration out of corners.

For KTM, the race at Spielberg is a crucial opportunity to perform in front of their home crowd. Acosta, as a talented young rider, has extra motivation to deliver a strong result. Meanwhile, Aprilia impressed by placing three riders in the top 10, indicating progress with the RS-GP.

With several regular riders absent, the opportunity for replacement riders and satellite teams to shine is wide open. The race will be a test of strategy and consistency, especially for those battling closely in the championship standings.
