A number of MotoGP riders have shared contrasting views regarding the implementation of back-to-back races in the 2026 championship calendar. Recent schedule adjustments, including shifting Qatar to run consecutively with Malaysia and Australia, have sparked intense discussions within the paddock regarding human endurance and physical limits.

While back-to-back events are not entirely new, the expansion of the calendar has shifted the paradigm. European rounds are now routinely paired together—such as France with Catalunya, and Italy with Hungary—alongside traditional triple-headers and overseas swings in South America and Asia.

This relentless scheduling significantly elevates physical strain and injury risks. Title contender Jorge Martin was forced to run a reduced schedule in Malaysia following an incident in Australia, while Raul Fernandez had to withdraw completely due to a broken finger sustained in Indonesia, proving how difficult recovery becomes during tight blocks.

Presented with an anonymous statement suggesting double-headers force riders to compete while unfit, Fabio Di Giannantonio candidly responded, At the end it’s true. Like, we do back-to-back races for the logistics, for the calendar. It’s becoming more and more tough to keep this physical condition through the year, and sometimes it’s also a bit dangerous.

Conversely, other competitors acknowledge that compact scheduling is simply a mathematical necessity for a modern 22-race season. Raul Fernandez noted, But it’s necessary to make back-to-back because we have a very long championship and we need also to have some free time for us because we are human.

Johann Zarco of LCR Honda offered a blunt reality check on the alternatives. Try to put 22 races from March to November without doing any back-to-back – it’s impossible, Zarco explained. Or we should race from 1 January to 31 December, but if we do that it means we never stop.
